July 28 – Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Minimal sleep for the weary.  We were up and out by about 8:45 to head to the Van Gogh Museum for our tour.  Unfortunately, Paul got a call that we were late.  According to our voucher our tour was of the Rijks Museum and started at 9:30.  But the guide had us at a 9:00 at the Van Gogh.  So, we arrived about a half hour late.  Fortunately, the group waited for us so we had the full tour.

The first exhibit was a number of self-portraits taken over his lifetime.

There were a few pencil drawings.

There were several anatomical study pencil and ink drawings.

The guide pointed out some pieces that had been influenced by Eastern art.

In one area of the museum they projected parts of Van Gogh's works on the bare walls.

There were a number of informational exhibits, including one with a microscope so you could look closely at the brush strokes.

But of course, there were large quantities of Van Gogh's works, many of them the iconic ones that one thinks of then thinking of Van Gogh.

The guide was very good and very passionate about art.  She explained the various influences on Van Gogh’s works and the support he had from his brother, Theodore.  We learned a lot about his life and his evolving art.

We had lunch in the museum café.  In the café they had an art area set up where budding artists could try their hand at art.  Chloe had a postcard of one of Van Gogh’s self-portraits and did a pencil drawing of it.  Very good.

We also spent some time shopping at the museum shop.  So many types of merchandise based on some of Van Gogh’s amazing art.

We ended up walking back from the museum.  Chloe wanted to wander a bit so she and Paul headed out while Mary headed straight back to the hotel.  Consequently, we had double the photos.  But it is a very photogenic city.

A game of chess at a nearby park.

The walk took us by the Rijks Museum...

and its lovely gardens.

Lots of bicycles.

Beautiful canals...

and old buildings.

The Flower Market.

A bit of shopping on the way...

including some window shopping.

Late afternoon Paul and Chloe went to visit the Anne Frank House Museum.   We had dinner after their return.
