July 20 and 23 – Bourge

Over the weekend Chloe joined a group of the other students and took the bus to the nearby town of Bourge where they spent several hours wandering the city and visiting the cathedral.  She came back very enthused about the cathedral and wanted to visit it again with her camera so on Tuesday, the 23rd, we got a taxi in the afternoon, after class, and went to Bourge.  It was a pretty drive with lots of vineyards, fields with rolls of hay, and fields of blooming sunflowers.

We were dropped off at the cathedral but first took a short walk,

had lunch (nice view),

and then back to the cathedral.

The Cathedral of St. Etienne of Bourges, was completed in the late 13th century.

Our driver told us that it was the sister to the Notre Dame in Paris…built about the same time and with the same basic floor plan.  It was beautiful and majestic.

There was a lot of stained glass.

And lots of statues and other art.

The interior was massive with soaring ceilings.

The organ under a massive window

Near the ceiling were more stained glass windows.

More photos of the cathedral interior.

On the way back the driver asked Chloe a lot of questions (she was in the front seat with him).  In French.  She did a good job talking with him (also in French).  As we got closer to Sancerre we had good views of the town on it's hill seemingly by itself.  The driver pulled over so we could get some shots.
