August 2 – Another Canal Cruise and Heading to Germany

This morning, we were offered a cruise of the Amsterdam canals.  Amawaters doesn’t charge for their shore excursions so we decided to take the tour even though we had done the tour two days ago.

Photos from the cruise.

Tip Sign on the Canal Boat

During the cruise we came across this operation on one of the canals.  They actually have a boat specially outfitted with a crane to fish bikes out of the canals.  In this city of over 1 million people they have about 2 million bikes.  They pull about 15,000 bikes out of the canal every year (and about 35 cards and 100 people).

A view that is supposed to show seven bridges in one shot.  Unfortunately, there was a boat in the way so we couldn't see all the way down.

The dancing houses.  Amsterdam buildings are built on wooden posts.  These buildings have foundation problems in that some of the posts are rotting.  So, they list in various directions.  Apparently, they are safe, are inhabited and the floors are level.

We were back on board in time for lunch and we set sail shortly after.
